Guest Speaker - Biographic Notes

Darren Brown began his photography career in high school where he was known as the camera guy. As the main photographer in his final year, Darren contributed many of the yearbook's final images. During high school, Darren did a co-op placement at Sarnia's daily newspaper, The Observer. There he met veteran photographer, Glenn Ogilvie and followed him on many assignments. Glenn was a generous photographer with both his knowledge and time. It was then that Glenn suggested Darren pursue his passion for photography at Loyalist College in Belleville, ON.

After taking a year off between high school and college - time he used to collect camera equipment while working at Nikon - Darren began two challenging years in the photojournalism program. Finishing his first year at the top of his class, Darren joined veteran photojournalist Peter Bregg at Maclean's magazine where he worked in the photo department and assisted on many shoots. Throughout the summer, Darren also got the chance to photograph many authors, actors, politicians and the odd riot. The summer finished off on a high as Peter Bregg - in Atlanta for the Olympics - and staff photographer Phill Snel - in France on vacation - left Darren to man the photo department on his own.

The second year of college proved more difficult than the first but good timing landed Darren a rare full-time staff position right out of college at the Ottawa Business Journal where he still works today. In summer of 2002 Transcontinental media purchased the OBJ and Darren began shooting community events for The Star and Weekly Journal - a move he believes saved his job as the tech bubble burst and staff at OBJ began disappearing.

In August of 2004, Darren started freelancing for the Ottawa Sun where he was exposed to higher profile assignments such as shooting pro sports, larger news events and breaking news.

When not taking pictures Darren enjoys road cycling and racing.
